Patient Programs

Sierra Vista Hospital is unique in our ability to care for medically complex, chronically or critically ill patients who require specialized care over an extended recovery period.

Generally, patients are referred to our Swing Bed Unit from a hospital stay on a regular floor like Telemetry or Orthopedics, or a higher leel of care like an intensive care unit.

In our Swing Bed Unit, a specialized approach to serious medical conditions is directed by physicians who see patients daily to meet their medical needs. The key to recovery at Sierra Vista Hospital is a doctor’s care, every day. Our physicians (called hospitalists) are frequently familiar to you from our clinic or hospital. The physician will lead the patient’s interdisciplinary team – including nurses, a pharmacist, a nutritionist, a case manager, and physical, occupational and speech therapists – to coordinate care that will secure the best possible
outcome.

WHO NEEDS TRANSITIONAL CARE
Patients who may benefit from Transitional Care in the swing bed unit at Sierra Vista Hospital include those with the following needs:
– IV antibiotic therapy
– Complex wound care
– Rehabilitation after orthopedic surgery, stroke, cardiac procedures
– Respiratory care
– Rehabilitation after fractures, amputation, or multiple injuries due to trauma

BENEFITS OF SIERRA VISTA HOSPITAL SWING BED PROGRAM
– Recover near your home in Sierra County.
– Private rooms with sleeper chairs. No need for ambulance transport to an acute care hospital in case of a medical emergency, or to other facilities for radiology, lab, etc. This is particularly important for seniors who might find it stressful to be transported to facilities in Las Cruces.

MEDICARE AND INSURANCE
The Swing Bed Program is a hospital-based program and Medi-care Part A is the primary payor. To qualify, a Medicare recipient must have completed a three day acute care stay at Sierra Vista Hospital or another acute care facility. Medicare can cover Swing Bed Services for up to 100 days with various co-pay charges. Co-pays can be offset by secondary insurance. Most Medicare Advantage, Medicaid and private insurances have Swing Bed benefits.

BETWEEN THE HOSPITAL & HOME
Unexpected medical events like illness, accident or surgery can prompt a short stay in the hospital. Sometimes patients are no longer acutely ill but are not quite ready to go home. Sierra Vista Hospital’s Swing Bed Program can help.

You can remain at Sierra Vista Hospital or be referred from another acute hospital and receive the
services you need to gain your strength back.
