Growing up in a small, mountain town in southern India, Guna was encouraged by her parents – both teachers, now retired – to reach high. And that she did! Having just come to Sierra Vista Hospital from India in January of 2023, Guna was selected as SVH’s 2025 Nurse of the Year, receiving the prestigious Daisy Award, for which she is both grateful and humbled. And to top it off, she recently completed her Master of Science Nursing Degree, studying nights and weekends while also working full time!

His official title is Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS), but Gilbert Vazquez is more fondly known as The Ultrasound Guy! That’s because, when it comes to ultrasound at Sierra Vista Hospital, Gilbert IS the guy! He loves his work and his patients… his patients love him… and all of us at SVH are grateful that Gilbert has chosen to call SVH and Sierra County home! Gilbert’s unlikely path to SVH began in Puerto Rico, where he was born and lived until the age of five, at which time his family moved to New York.
Decades ago, when Bernice was diagnosed with breast cancer, things were different. Cancer wasn’t discussed. No one talked about it. There was no such thing as “cancer survivors”. Breast cancer patients experienced lengthy hospital stays following surgery. Surgery was followed by chemo. And patients felt alone. Very alone.

Once intent on becoming a neurosurgeon or obstetrician, we’re grateful that Vangie ultimately pursued a Medical Technologist career, albeit halfway around the world.
